One of my few daily commitments is alone time with God. I cherish it greatly. In fact, it’s the most important part of my day. It sets the tone for everything I’m struggling with or contemplating.
But distractions attempt to get the best of me—specifically, my iPhone. You see, my iPhone is my alarm clock. However, it’s also the hub of my text messages, social media notifications, and every other distraction known to man! Identity. It’s a touchy subject. Who or what defines you? Modern culture tends to equate identity with popularity. In other words, our level of acceptance determines our importance.
Don’t believe me? Look at a teenager’s social media account. A collection of so many highlight reels, longing for acceptance. I know because I often find myself there. Proverbs 16 is full of directional statements. I don’t know about you, but I need direction. This life is full of questions, concerns, and circumstances. Often times, we struggle to find the right path through life. Today, let’s gain some perspective by reading God’s Word.
“We can make our own plans, but the LORD gives the right answer” (Prov. 16:1 NLT). Do you ever struggle to hear the voice of God?
“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry” (James 1:19 NLT). I’m trying to discern the will of God. But here’s the problem: I’m not a good listener. Instead of sitting still in the presence of God, I try to figure things out by myself. My mind often speaks. My ears rarely listen. And yes, it makes me angry! |
